possible duplicate:
how start working in open source projects?

i consider myself mediocre programmer in c, c# java , python programming. have both win32 api , unix knowledge. have been thinking of getting open source project contributor polish skills , @ same time learn work in distributed large team. know there few question in stackoverflow similar mine, seem people different skill sets or more advanced programmers me. looking suggestions.

  1. don't scared. cannot fail. whatever happens, you'll learn stuff.
  2. start small. one-line fix fine. (a friend of mine started linux kernel career minus-one line fix, actually: fixed removing line.)
  3. work on interests or use anyway.
  4. looking @ project's bug tracker things helpful.
